Summary:
The selected candidate for this position will be responsible for ensuring the pre- and post-award management for an assigned sponsored research portfolio within the VCU Pauley Heart Center and Division of Cardiology. The focus of this position is to support Principal Investigators and study teams in the development and successful submission of proposals for research funding, as well as provide compliant financial and administrative management of funded grants and contracts.
This position is responsible for assessing the day to day management needs of the overall portfolio and will work with the Associate Director and the Director and Division Chair to establish routine reporting and meetings to foster open communication related to sponsored research management in all units assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
Specific functions of this role include:
-- Working with senior leadership and scientific faculty across disciplines to develop project proposals and manage active grants, ensuring compliance with financial and regulatory requirements.Areas of responsibility include budgets; human subjects; grant reporting; subcontracts; financial monitoring and planning.
-- Support pre- and post-award activities associated with varied grant mechanisms including: NIH Training and Research mechanisms, multi-component program project-style grants from NIH, PCORI and/or American Heart Association, including specialized progress reports and complex budgets
-- Manage inter-institutional subcontracts
-- Support Imaging Core Lab financial infrastructure including billing/invoicing to internal and external users
-- Keeping abreast of new and ongoing federal and non-federal funding opportunities and inform PHC members; provide guidelines, due dates, and advice to PIs; track and supervise preparation and submission of all non-research proposal components.
-- Provide oversight during research study activation including performing coverage analysis, routing through feasibility/protocol oversite committees or Cancer Center PRMC as needed, ensuring quick activation timelines
-- Summary reporting, assessments, communications with administrative leadership
-- Clearly communicating to internal and external audiences, sponsor and university policies, processes, and requirements related with research proposals to faculty, staff, postdoctoral research associates, and students.

Minimum Qualifications
-- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 2 years of direct pre- and post-award research administration experience required
-- Must be proficient in the following areas: budget development, analysis of financial transactions for trends and variances; expense forecasting; creating reports; financial reconciliation
-- Must possess ability to interpret and apply complex government regulations and contractual terms.
-- Must have excellent customer service skills, written and verbal communication skills, be pro-active in asking questions and seeking guidance when needed.
-- General understanding of IRB policies pertaining to regulatory requirements in human subjects research
-- Strong problem solving and time management skills are essential, including ability to prioritize and manage competing priorities and deadlines.
-- Must be precise, thorough, and reliable and perform daily activities with minimal supervision.
-- Must be proficient in the use of computers with an ability to learn new systems and software applications with ease. Proficiency in the use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe required.
-- Ability to work as part of a dynamic team in a diverse environment required.
-- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
-- Prefer 3 or more years of direct experience in research administration in the areas of proposal development, financial management, effort reporting, and project close-out.
-- Knowledge of NIH and NCI grant submission requirements
-- Knowledge of study activation processes and requirements in compliance with comprehensive cancer center guidelines
-- Knowledge of OnCore and PACS systems a plus
-- CRA certification or ability to pursue within first year preferred
