Associate Director of Content
The Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts (VCUarts) seeks a dynamic Associate Director of Content to manage collaborative content development for the school's web, digital media, and print channels.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Communications, the Associate Director of Content helps guide the strategic direction and elevation of the school's brand through its digital presence and print communications. The Associate Director partners closely with the communications team to create content for web, email, social media, apps, and seasonal publications in keeping with the School's and VCU's brand identity.
Ranked by US News & World Report as a top-five arts and design school, VCUarts (arts.vcu.edu) includes over 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students with nationally recognized programs in design, visual and performing arts. Students are taught by over 175 full-time teaching and research faculty members, and the school is supported by over 60 staff members that assist in daily processes. The School of the Arts includes two campuses, one in Richmond and one in Doha, Qatar. The Richmond campus is located on the university's 75-acre Monroe Park campus situated in the city's historic Fan District.
Expectations:
· Develop and implement an integrated content and storytelling strategy to support and elevate the school's brand across the web, digital media, and print channels.
· Develop and oversee the implementation of an integrated content calendar, including oversight of a digital advertising and sponsored content plan.
· Manage content staff and contractors, including writers, social media managers, videographer and photographer.
· Lead project management and content development for key publications, such as the undergraduate viewbook and annual magazine.
· Manage content development and workflow on projects; report on the effectiveness of marketing efforts; evaluate processes and identify areas for growth and improvement; recommend best practices for stewarding state resources.
· Strive to create and publish content that reflects VCUarts as a diverse, inclusive and welcoming community for all students, faculty and staff.
· Write speeches, talking points, and internal and external messages conveying institutional priorities.
· Write press releases, coordinate storytelling efforts with university public affairs and external media companies as needed.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
· Bachelor's degree in communications, advertising, marketing, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education, professional training, and experience.
· Appropriate demonstrated knowledge in managing print and digital media projects to create integrated communications.
· Success supervising and mentoring an integrated team of communications professionals (writers, photographers, etc.)
· Ability to understand and foster team dynamics and collaboration.
· Exceptional communication and customer service skills.
· Attention to detail when writing, editing, and proofreading.
· Superior organizational skills, including the ability to maintain project archives, track expenses and keep an inventory of marketing materials.
· Ability to clearly and precisely express complex ideas in multiple forms; skilled at adapting language, format and style for various media and audiences.
· Ability to prioritize, take ownership and drive projects from beginning to end, working with multiple groups effectively and on multiple projects concurrently.
· Ability to attend to details and meet deadlines.
· Knowledge of and experience developing and implementing marketing and communications plans and work within established deadlines and budget limitations.
· Experience reviewing analytics, evaluating campaign performance and making strategic adjustments as necessary.
· Ability to work in a culturally diverse and inclusive work environment.
Preferred Hiring Standards:
· Passion for storytelling coupled with strategic content management.
· Experience in digital marketing and analytics.
· Experience with earned media or media relations.
· Proficiency in project management software, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft products, especially Excel and Word.
· Familiarity with WordPress, PowerPoint/Keynote.
· Knowledge of the arts and design, particularly in an academic setting.
